The short version
Microsoft lists no required exam or course before AZ-802, so you can book it whenever you like. It does describe the experience it expects: administering Windows Server with tools such as Windows Admin Center, Hyper-V, PowerShell, Azure Arc, Azure Monitor, Azure Update Manager, and Microsoft Defender for Cloud, with familiarity in Active Directory Domain Services. Use the checklist below to see whether you are there.
Required versus recommended
Required. Nothing formal. The exam page shows no prerequisite exam, and the credential page shows AZ-802 as the exam for the Microsoft Certified: Windows Server Administrator Associate credential. You do need a Microsoft account to schedule; Microsoft recommends a personal one, not a work or school account.
Recommended by Microsoft. Experience with the technologies listed above, and familiarity with Active Directory. Microsoft’s description of the candidate says you deploy, manage, and troubleshoot Windows Server as a workload on-premises, in the cloud, or in a hybrid setup.
Not required. AZ-800 and AZ-801. Microsoft’s pages show both as retired on September 30, 2026, so there is no point studying for them as a stepping stone. There is also no required lower-level certification. Fundamentals exams from Microsoft are optional for this exam.
What to know before you start
You will move faster if these basics are already solid:
- Windows Server administration: installing roles and features, Server Manager, services, local users and groups.
- Networking basics: IP addressing, subnets, DNS name resolution, and how a client finds a server.
- Active Directory concepts: domains, forests, organizational units, users, groups, and what a domain controller does.
- PowerShell basics: running cmdlets, reading help, using the pipeline, and connecting to remote machines.
- Azure basics: subscriptions, resource groups, virtual machines, storage accounts, and the portal.
If several of these are unfamiliar, spend a few weeks on them before you begin the study plan. The exam builds on this knowledge and does not teach it.
Skills self-check
Tick off what you can do without looking it up. If you can do most of them, you are in a good place to start. If you can do few, plan the 8-week version.
- Explain the difference between transferring and seizing an operations master role.
- Describe what a read-only domain controller is for and what “password replication” means for it.
- Explain what a site and a subnet do in Active Directory.
- Create a Group Policy Object, link it, and read the results for one machine.
- Create a DNS zone, a conditional forwarder, and a DHCP scope.
- Create a virtual machine in Hyper-V, take a checkpoint, and explain when you should not use one.
- Create a storage space and say what each resiliency type needs in disks.
- Share a folder with correct share and NTFS permissions.
- Use PowerShell remoting to run a command on another server.
- Read Event Viewer and Performance Monitor to find why a server is slow.
- Describe what Azure Arc does for a server that is outside Azure.
- Explain what BitLocker protects and where the recovery key can be stored.
If you have gaps
- Weak on Active Directory: build a two-server lab and promote the first domain controller. Do it twice.
- Weak on Azure: a free trial subscription is enough to try Arc, Azure Files, and Azure Monitor.
- Weak on PowerShell: run one task a day in PowerShell instead of the graphical tool.
- Weak on hybrid ideas: read the Microsoft Learn documentation on Azure Arc-enabled servers and Windows Admin Center.
Practice exams help here, too. A first practice set taken cold shows which areas you have never used.
Do you need a certification first?
No. Microsoft does not list a suggested preceding certification for this exam on the pages we read. If you are new to IT, general networking or operating-system knowledge helps more than any one credential. Our how to study guide and certification costs guide can help you plan the wider path.

Can I take AZ-802 as my first Microsoft exam?
Yes. No earlier exam is required. Make sure you can handle the self-check list above first.
