The short version
AZ-305 is worth it if your work involves choosing or defending Azure designs, and if you want a credential that shows you can do that. It is less useful if you mostly operate existing resources or write application code, or if your employer does not use Azure. Microsoft publishes no salary or job-count figures for it, so this page does not either. Facts about the exam were checked on Microsoft Learn on October 22, 2026.
What the credential shows
AZ-305 is the single required exam for Microsoft Certified: Azure Solutions Architect Expert, and you must also hold Azure Administrator Associate. Microsoft describes the role as advising stakeholders and turning business requirements into designs that follow the Azure Well-Architected Framework and the Cloud Adoption Framework.
So the credential signals two things. First, that you know the breadth of Azure services across identity, governance, data, continuity, and infrastructure. Second, that you can pick between close options when requirements pull in different directions. It is a design credential, and Microsoft says candidates should have advanced experience in IT operations plus Azure administration, development, and DevOps.
Who benefits most
- Azure administrators moving toward design. You already run workloads. The exam pushes you to explain why one design beats another, which is the step into architecture.
- Consultants and pre-sales engineers. A credential helps when customers ask what your recommendations are based on.
- Cloud engineers in teams that review designs. The exam gives you shared vocabulary for cost, reliability, and recovery trade-offs.
- People whose employer or partner program values Microsoft credentials. Check your own situation, since requirements differ by organization.
Who can probably skip it
- Beginners to Azure. Start with the basics and the administrator path first. The credential itself requires the administrator associate anyway.
- Developers who only deploy to an existing platform. A developer or DevOps exam may match your daily work better.
- Anyone who does not touch Azure. The skills are Azure-specific, though the habit of weighing requirements transfers to other clouds.
- People hoping the credential replaces experience. It does not.
What it does not prove
Passing shows you chose well in exam scenarios. It does not show you can run a migration, negotiate with stakeholders, or keep a design alive over years. Employers know this. Treat the credential as one signal next to real projects you can describe.
It also expires. Microsoft says the credential is valid for one year, and you renew it for free with an online assessment. That is light work, but it is a recurring task. See renewal and retakes for the details.
Effort versus benefit
The effort depends on where you start. Someone with a few years of hands-on Azure work may need a few weeks of focused review. Someone with thin design experience may need much longer, because the hard part is judgment, not memory. Our study plan offers 4-week and 8-week routes, and the numbers vary a lot from person to person.
The cost side includes the exam fee, which Microsoft says depends on the country or region where you sit it, and your study time. A retake needs another fee. The benefit side is harder to measure. Be honest about whether your next job, promotion, or client work actually needs this signal, or whether a project would teach you more.
Neighboring options
- Azure Administrator Associate (AZ-104). The credential Microsoft names as a requirement for the expert credential. If you do not hold it, you need it anyway.
- DevOps Engineer Expert (AZ-400). Better if your work is pipelines and delivery. See the AZ-400 guide and our comparison of AZ-305 and AZ-400.
- Security, data, or AI credentials. If your role is narrower than general architecture, a specialized exam may fit better.
When to take it and when to wait
Take it when you can read a requirements list and name the design in your head, and when your practice scores are consistently above your target. It also helps to take it soon after finishing real design work, while the trade-offs are fresh.
Wait if the skills list on Microsoft’s study guide still reads like a foreign language. The English exam was updated on April 17, 2026, and the localized versions follow later, so make sure your study material matches the current skills list.

Frequently asked questions
Does AZ-305 raise my salary?
Microsoft publishes no such figure, so we will not guess. Results depend on your market, employer, and experience.
Can I take AZ-305 without AZ-104?
The exam page lists no prerequisite exam. The expert credential does require Azure Administrator Associate.
Is it worth renewing every year?
Renewal is free and online, so it is a low-cost way to keep the credential active if you still need it.
