Is AZ-104 Worth It? An Honest Look

The short version

AZ-104 is worth it if you run, or want to run, Azure resources and need a recognized way to show that you can do it. It is much less useful if you only need to talk about the cloud, if you already design solutions at a higher level, or if your work is in a different part of Azure. It proves you passed a test of administrator skills at one point in time. It does not prove you can run a real environment. No salary or pass-rate figures appear here, because Microsoft does not publish them.

What the credential shows

Passing AZ-104 earns Microsoft Certified: Azure Administrator Associate. Microsoft lists it at intermediate level for the administrator role. The audience text describes someone who implements, manages, and monitors an organization’s Azure environment across virtual networks, storage, compute, identity, security, and governance.

So the credential tells a reader three things: you know the standard administration tasks, you have seen the common services side by side, and you kept up with the exam as it changed. Microsoft renews it yearly, so a current credential also suggests you were checked on recent updates.

Who benefits most

  • People moving into Azure from on-premises work. If you already administer servers and networks, the exam gives a structured path through the Azure version of that work.
  • Help desk and junior cloud staff aiming for administrator tasks. It is a clear goal with a published skills list.
  • Teams that work with partners or clients who ask for Microsoft credentials. That is a reason about requirements, not about skill.
  • Developers who are asked to run their own infrastructure. The exam fills the gaps in networking, storage, and governance that day-to-day coding rarely shows.
  • Anyone who plans to go further. Microsoft’s Azure Solutions Architect Expert credential requires Azure Administrator Associate first, and DevOps Engineer Expert requires either Azure Administrator Associate or Azure Developer Associate.

Who can skip it

  • You are brand new to cloud ideas. Microsoft’s fundamentals exam for Azure may be a better first step, though Microsoft does not require it for AZ-104.
  • Your day job is data, security operations, or app development, and Azure administration is not part of it. A different Microsoft exam will match your work better.
  • You already have years of hands-on Azure work and your employer or clients never ask for credentials. The exam will mostly confirm what you know.
  • Your environment is mostly Windows Server in a data center with only light Azure use. Microsoft’s Windows Server administration exam, AZ-802, may fit better.

What it does not prove

  • It does not show you can design a whole solution. That is the architect level.
  • It does not show speed or judgment under a real outage.
  • It does not cover everything in Azure. Microsoft says the skill bullets illustrate the topics and that related topics may appear, and it is a snapshot of one skills list.
  • A pass says nothing about experience. Two people can pass with very different amounts of real-world practice.

Effort versus benefit

The effort is real but it varies widely. Someone who administers Azure every week may need a few weeks of focused review of the gaps. Someone coming from on-premises work usually needs longer, because Azure names, defaults, and limits are new. Hands-on practice matters more than reading, as the Microsoft study guide itself recommends. Our study plan gives four-week and eight-week layouts, and the difficulty page explains where people struggle.

Ongoing effort also counts. The credential is renewed every 12 months with a free online assessment, so keeping it costs a modest amount of time each year, as the renewal page explains. Exam fees depend on your country, so check Microsoft’s page at booking time.

A simple way to judge it: write down what you would do differently at work, or in an interview, with the credential. If you can name something concrete, such as qualifying for the next exam, meeting a client requirement, or setting a clear study goal, the effort pays off. If the answer is vague, spend the time on a project instead.

Neighboring options

  • Azure Solutions Architect Expert (AZ-305). A design-focused exam. Microsoft requires Azure Administrator Associate first for that credential. See the AZ-305 comparison.
  • DevOps Engineer Expert (AZ-400). Pipelines and automation. Microsoft accepts Azure Administrator Associate or Azure Developer Associate as the first step. See the AZ-400 guide and the AZ-104 vs AZ-400 page.
  • Windows Server Administrator Associate (AZ-802). For hybrid Windows Server work. See the AZ-104 vs AZ-802 page.

When to take it and when to wait

Take it when you have used the main services yourself, you can finish a timed practice set at a score you are happy with, and you have a reason beyond curiosity. Wait if the skills list has big areas you have never touched, if Microsoft has announced an update that you would rather study for from the start, or if you are in the middle of a project and cannot protect study time.

On updates: Microsoft’s English skills list changed on April 17, 2026, and the other languages follow about eight weeks later. Check the study guide’s date before you start so you study the right version.
