Have you worked through the AZ-400 learning paths and still don't know whether you are ready to book the exam? These practice tests answer that question and show where your gaps are.

This practice set contains five practice tests with 100 questions each, 500 in total, written against the AZ-400 study guide with skills measured as of July 27, 2026. Every test follows the official weighting: build and release pipelines take just over half, and the rest covers processes, source control, security and instrumentation.

AZ-400 has no retired predecessor, but its products have changed a lot. Azure AD is now Microsoft Entra ID, GitHub Advanced Security is sold as GitHub Secret Protection and GitHub Code Security, Managed DevOps Pools is the recommended way to scale self-hosted agents, workload identity federation replaces stored secrets, URL ping tests have given way to standard availability tests, and Azure Automation State Configuration is on its way out in favour of Azure Machine Configuration. Practice material written a few years ago still teaches the old answers. These questions follow the current Microsoft Learn and GitHub Docs pages.

The five tests get harder in how the questions are asked, not in how obscure the facts are:

  • Test 1, Groundwork: direct questions, one concept each.
  • Test 2, In Practice: short scenarios that separate features people often mix up.
  • Test 3, Trade-offs: two answers look right and one requirement decides.
  • Test 4, Under the Hood: YAML keywords, task inputs, CLI commands and settings.
  • Test 5, Exam Day: long multi-requirement scenarios and troubleshooting in one timed sitting.

Every answer option has its own feedback that says why it is right or wrong, and what a wrong option actually does. Each question also has an overall explanation with a link to the official documentation, so you can check the source yourself.

After each attempt PrepKiwi shows your score per skill area, so you can revise where it matters. The pass mark is 80% for tests 1 to 4 and 85% for test 5, deliberately higher than the real exam.

What this practice set is not: it is not a video course and not a copy of the real exam. AZ-400 exam questions are confidential, and nothing here claims to reproduce them. Use these tests alongside the free Microsoft Learn material and hands-on practice to measure and sharpen what you know.

Groundwork: Core Azure DevOps and GitHub Concepts

100 questions · 165 minutes · pass mark 80%

Start here, ideally before you study anything else, so you get an honest baseline. This test covers every AZ-400 skill area in the official weighting: processes and communications, source control, build and release pipelines, security and compliance, and instrumentation. Questions are direct: one concept per question and short scenarios that map a requirement to the right Azure DevOps or GitHub feature. 100 questions, 12 of them choose-two. You have 165 minutes, and the pass mark is 80%. That is deliberately higher than the real exam, because a practice test at home is easier than a proctored exam with a scaled score. Every option has its own explanation, and each question links to the Microsoft Learn or GitHub Docs page it is based on. Review the explanations for the questions you got right as well.

In Practice: Everyday Pipeline and Repository Scenarios

100 questions · 165 minutes · pass mark 80%

Short, realistic scenarios from day-to-day DevOps work: a pipeline that runs twice, a branch policy that blocks the wrong people, a feed that won't serve a package, an alert that fires too often. The focus is on telling neighbouring features apart - pipeline artifacts versus caches, variable groups versus secure files, metric alerts versus log search alerts, GitHub Apps versus personal access tokens. 100 questions across all five skill areas in the official weighting, 14 of them choose-two. Time limit 165 minutes, pass mark 80%. Use the per-domain score after each attempt to find the area that needs work before you move on to test 3.

Trade-offs: When Two Answers Look Right

100 questions · 170 minutes · pass mark 80%

Here two answers usually look right, and one stated constraint decides between them: cost, network isolation, compliance, on-premises resources, speed or least privilege. Scenarios name a company, its current setup and what it must achieve, so read the whole stem before looking at the options. Typical choices: Microsoft-hosted versus self-hosted agents, deployment stacks versus complete mode, default versus advanced CodeQL setup, managed identity versus service principal. 100 questions across all five AZ-400 skill areas, 14 of them choose-two. Time limit 170 minutes, pass mark 80%. The explanations say why the losing option loses, which is the skill this test trains.

Under the Hood: YAML, CLI, Tasks and Settings

100 questions · 140 minutes · pass mark 80%

The implementation level: exact YAML keywords, task inputs, Azure CLI and Git commands, the order of steps and the settings that make a feature behave the way you want. Expect questions on deployment job strategies, template expressions, trigger filters, cache keys, retention leases, Bicep scopes, deployment stack deny settings, OpenID Connect claims, GITHUB_TOKEN permissions and KQL. Questions are shorter than in test 3, but the details matter. 100 questions across all five skill areas in the official weighting, 16 of them choose-two. Time limit 140 minutes, pass mark 80%. If you score lower here than on test 3, spend time in a real Azure DevOps organization or GitHub repository before test 5.

Exam Day: Full-Length Simulation

100 questions · 175 minutes · pass mark 85%

Take this one last, in a single sitting, without notes. It is the readiness check: the longest scenarios in this practice set, several requirements per question, troubleshooting cases and all five AZ-400 skill areas mixed together in the official weighting. 100 questions, 16 of them choose-two, in 175 minutes, which leaves less thinking time per question than any earlier test. The pass mark is 85%, higher than on the other tests and higher than the real exam demands. Microsoft reports a scaled score, and a practice test at home is easier than a proctored exam, so a margin is sensible. If you pass this test comfortably, you are in a good position to book. If you don't, go back to your weakest domain first, reread the explanations, and try again after a few days.

What you will practice

  • Test your readiness for AZ-400 across all five skill areas, weighted as in the July 27, 2026 study guide
  • Tell apart Azure DevOps and GitHub features that are easy to confuse, from agents and runners to feeds and alerts
  • Choose the right design when two answers look plausible and one requirement such as cost or security decides
  • Learn from per-option feedback and an explanation with a Microsoft Learn or GitHub Docs link for every question
  • Work through YAML, CLI and configuration details for pipelines, Bicep, deployment slots, OIDC and KQL
  • Finish with a full-length simulation that shows whether you are ready to book the real exam
  • Use the per-domain score after each attempt to plan your revision where the gaps really are
  • Build a mental model of secure pipelines: secretless authentication, Key Vault, secure files and code scanning

Who is this for

This practice set is for developers, infrastructure administrators and platform engineers who are preparing for exam AZ-400: Designing and Implementing Microsoft DevOps Solutions, the exam for the Microsoft Certified: DevOps Engineer Expert certification. It suits Azure administrators and developers moving into DevOps and platform roles, site reliability and release engineers who want to check their knowledge against the official skills outline, and students or career changers who have worked through the Microsoft Learn paths and want to know whether it has stuck. Team leads, security engineers and technical project managers who work with Azure Boards, branch policies, GitHub Advanced Security or release pipelines will also find the scenarios useful. Many older AZ-400 practice sets still use retired names and features such as Azure AD, a single GitHub Advanced Security product, URL ping tests or the Log Analytics agent; this practice set follows the current documentation. It is a set of five practice tests with detailed explanations. It is not a video course, and it does not replace hands-on experience or Microsoft's own training.

Requirements

  • No prior certification is needed to start. These are practice tests, meant to be used alongside the free official Microsoft Learn material and hands-on work, not instead of them.
  • The exam expects working experience with Azure administration or development and with both Azure DevOps and GitHub. Basic familiarity with Git, YAML and the Azure CLI will help you get the most from the explanations.
  • Access to a free Azure DevOps organization and a GitHub account is useful for trying out what the explanations describe, but not required.
