The short answer
Security+ SY0-801 is worth it if you need a broad, vendor-neutral security credential and your job or target role asks for one. It is a weaker choice if you already work deep in a security specialty, or if nobody you want to work for cares about it. It proves you know the material at a point in time. It does not prove you can do the job.
What the credential shows
CompTIA describes the target candidate as a security administrator with two years of hands-on experience. Passing shows that you can handle the wide set of tasks in the exam objectives: picking controls, reading attack signs, setting access rules, responding to incidents and working with governance rules. The objectives document says the exam is accredited under ISO 17024 through ANAB, which is a statement about how the exam is run, not about you.
The exam is broad rather than deep. That is both its value and its limit. A hiring manager who sees it learns that you know the vocabulary and the main ideas. They do not learn whether you can tune a SIEM or lead a response.
Who benefits most
- People moving into security from IT support, networking or systems work. It gives structure to scattered knowledge and a recognizable line on a resume.
- Career starters. It gives you a checklist (the objectives) to learn against.
- People whose employer or contract asks for it. Some roles name a specific certification. Check which version they accept.
- Self-taught people who want an outside check on gaps.
Who can skip it
- Specialists with a track record. If your work history already shows the skills, a broad foundation exam adds little.
- People who need senior-level proof. Security+ is a foundation. Higher-level security credentials exist for that, and some are vendor-specific.
- Anyone buying it only because a forum said so. Look at five job posts you would apply for. If none mention it, ask yourself why you are spending the time.
- Those who dislike memorization-heavy study, unless they have a purpose strong enough to carry them.
What it does not prove
It does not prove hands-on skill. The exam includes performance-based questions, but CompTIA does not publish how many or what they look like. It does not prove you can work under pressure in a live incident. It does not replace experience.
We do not quote salary figures, job counts or pass rates. CompTIA does not publish pass rates on the pages we read, and third-party salary numbers are hard to compare and age fast. Check current job posts in your own region instead.
Effort versus benefit
Study time varies a lot. Someone with a few years in IT may need weeks of part-time study. Someone starting from zero may need months, plus time to learn networking basics first. See the study plan for week-by-week schedules and is SY0-801 hard for the difficulty side.
Count the whole cost, not only the exam: study materials, practice sets, possibly a retake, and later renewal. CompTIA certifications run on a three-year cycle, and renewal needs continuing education. The renewal and retakes page explains how. For budgeting, see certification costs.
Neighboring options
- A+ or Network+. People often take these first, mainly for the fundamentals. CompTIA does not require them for Security+. Whether they pay off depends on your starting point.
- CySA+ (CS0-004). A step toward analyst work. CompTIA recommends about four years in a SOC analyst or vulnerability analyst role. See SY0-801 vs CS0-004.
- SecAI+ (CY0-001). Focused on AI in security. CompTIA recommends Security+ or equivalent first. See SY0-801 vs CY0-001.
When to take it, and when to wait
SY0-801 is a new version. CompTIA expects it on or around November 17, 2026. The current version, SY0-701, retires on June 11, 2027 in English. That creates a choice:
- Take SY0-701 now if you can finish before it retires, your study material matches it, and your employer accepts it. Note that the older exam lists more languages than the new one.
- Wait for SY0-801 if you have time, you prefer the newer content, or you are only starting. V8 has a dedicated objective on AI risks (2.6), which we cannot compare line by line with the older objectives.
- Do not wait only because the new version might feel easier. Nobody can say that before launch.
Wait if your learning goal is unclear. A certification taken without a purpose is a cost, not an asset.
A simple test
Answer three questions. Does a role I want ask for Security+ or something like it? Can I put in the study hours over the next few months? Will I use the knowledge soon in a job or project? Three yes answers make the case. Fewer than two suggest you should delay or choose something else.
FAQ
Is Security+ enough to get a security job?
It helps you get noticed, but employers also look at experience, projects and interviews. It is one part of the picture.
Is it worth it without experience?
Yes for many people, as long as you pair it with hands-on practice such as labs and virtual machines.
Should I wait for the new version?
It depends on your deadlines and what your employer accepts. Compare the retirement date of SY0-701 with your own timeline.
