The short version
SC-900 is an entry-level exam, and Microsoft rates it as beginner. It is not hard in the sense of deep technical skill, but it is wide. The challenge is remembering many similar service names and what each one does. Most people with steady study find it manageable, though nothing here is a promise about your result.
Why it feels easy
- You only need to “describe” things. No configuration, no scripts, no command lines.
- The pass mark is a scaled 700 out of 1,000, and Microsoft gives no penalty for wrong answers.
- Microsoft publishes a free practice assessment and an exam sandbox, so there are few surprises about the format.
- The material is well documented on Microsoft Learn.
Why it feels hard
Many look-alike names. Microsoft has Entra ID, Entra ID Protection, Defender for Cloud, Defender for Cloud Apps, Defender for Endpoint, Defender for Identity, and more. Questions often test whether you can tell neighbors apart.
Breadth. Four domains span identity, network security, threat detection, and data governance. You can know one area deeply and still lose points in another.
Fast pacing. You have 45 minutes of exam time. Microsoft does not publish the question count for SC-900, but its general range is 40 to 60 for most exams, so there is little time for long deliberation.
Product names change. Microsoft renames services from time to time. Older videos and articles may use names like Azure Active Directory or Microsoft 365 Defender. Make sure your notes use the names in the current study guide.
Strange vocabulary. Terms such as SIEM, SOAR, CSPM, GRC, and DLP are acronyms that you must be able to expand and explain.
Who usually finds it easier
- People who already administer Microsoft 365 or Azure, even casually.
- IT help desk and support staff who deal with sign-in problems and MFA.
- Anyone with a security or compliance background, who knows the concepts and only needs the Microsoft names.
Who usually finds it harder
- Students and career changers with no cloud exposure. The ideas are simple, but the context is new.
- Experienced engineers who skip the study guide, assume it is basic, and meet unfamiliar Purview features.
- Candidates who study from an old source and learn outdated names.
Common reasons people fail
- They skip the compliance domain, which is 20-25% of the exam.
- They memorize definitions and cannot match a feature to a short business scenario.
- They confuse similar pairs, such as sensitivity labels and retention labels, or Azure Firewall and network security groups.
- They rely on one source, such as a video course, and never test themselves.
- They study the wrong version of the skills measured.
How to judge your readiness
Do not rely on a feeling. Use evidence:
- Take full-length timed practice sets in one sitting.
- Score consistently above your target across several different sets, not one.
- Check each domain separately. A good average can hide a weak domain.
- Explain, out loud, the difference between each confusing pair from your notes.
- Review wrong answers and be able to say why the right one is right.
Remember that practice exams measure readiness. Real exam wording differs, and the Microsoft score is scaled, so a percentage in practice does not convert to the real thing. Our practice tests use their own pass marks, set deliberately high to leave a safety margin, but they are a rule of thumb, not a prediction.
What if you fail?
You can retake after 24 hours, then after 14 days between further attempts, with a limit of five attempts in 12 months. The score report shows a bar for each skill area, which tells you where to spend the extra time. See exam format for the rules.
