The short version
The credential is valid for two years. To renew it you take the full current exam again; there is no shorter update exam. If you fail, you can retake after 14 days, with no published cap on attempts. Each attempt is paid again. These rules come from the exam guide (dated March 18, 2026) and the Databricks certification FAQ, both checked on October 22, 2026.
How long the credential lasts
The exam guide gives the validity as 2 years. The FAQ adds that the digital badge also expires two years after it is awarded, and that Databricks notifies you before your expiration date. The clock starts when the credential is awarded, which is after the proctor review of a passing attempt, not on the day you sit the exam.
Databricks does not say how far ahead of the expiry date you may take the renewal exam. It also does not publish a grace period. So treat the expiry date as a hard deadline and do not count on extra time.
How renewal works
The exam guide says recertification is required every two years and that you must take the current live exam. The FAQ uses the same wording: the full current live exam. In practice that means:
- There is no continuing-education route, no short refresher test, and no points system in what Databricks publishes.
- The exam you take for renewal may differ from the one you passed. The platform changes quickly, and the guide is updated whenever the exam changes.
- You register and pay the same way as for a first attempt. The fee is on the vendor page, and we do not print prices here.
Because renewal means the current exam, your renewal study should start from the newest exam guide, not from your old notes. Compare the outline against what you remember. Newer topics in the current outline include Agent Bricks, MCP servers, and custom scorers, so a gap between old and new material is likely.
What happens if it lapses
Databricks publishes no special path for a lapsed credential. The published rule is simple: to hold a valid credential you pass the current exam. If your two years run out, the sensible reading is that you take the current exam again like any other candidate. If you need certainty about a specific case, ask Databricks, because the FAQ does not describe it.
Retakes after a failed attempt
| Rule | What Databricks publishes |
|---|---|
| Waiting period | 14 days between attempts |
| Number of attempts | No limit stated |
| Cost of a retake | The same as the first attempt |
| Free retake vouchers | Not issued |
| Rescheduling | More than 24 hours ahead for online exams, more than 72 hours for test centers; otherwise a fee applies |
The FAQ describes the waiting period as 14 days between each take. It also says that vouchers cannot be used for retakes. Because each try costs money, it is worth using the two weeks well. Open your practice results, find the domain where you lost the most marks, and rebuild that part of your knowledge rather than rereading everything.
The retake rules sit in the general FAQ, not on a page for this exam alone. The exam guide itself does not repeat them.
If the exam changes or is retired
The FAQ says each Databricks exam has only one version, and that the exam guide on the certification page is the authority on current topics. The guide also says it is updated whenever the exam changes and that Databricks asks you to check it about two weeks before your exam date. This exam was published on March 18, 2026, and the vendor page shows no retirement notice as of October 22, 2026.
For older Databricks exams that were deprecated, the FAQ says credentials already issued stay valid for their normal period. It states this for specific exams from 2022, so do not read it as a promise for every future change. If Databricks retires this exam, check its notice for what happens to existing holders.
A sample timeline
Say you pass on March 10, 2027 and your credential is awarded a few days later.
- March 2027: the credential starts. Your badge shows a two-year validity.
- Early 2028: Databricks sends reminders before the expiry date.
- Autumn 2028: open the then-current exam guide and compare it with your notes.
- Late 2028 to early 2029: book the current exam, leaving at least 14 days of slack in case a retake is needed.
- Before the expiry date: pass the current exam to renew.
This is an example, not a rule. Dates, reminders and guide versions are the vendor’s to set.
