AI-300 Renewal and Retakes Explained

The short version

Passing AI-300 earns an associate-level credential, and Microsoft says associate credentials expire after one year. You renew for free with a short online assessment, but only inside a six-month window before the expiry date. If you fail the exam itself, you wait 24 hours for the second try and 14 days between later tries. All of this comes from Microsoft Learn pages checked on October 22, 2026.

Does the AI-300 credential expire?

Yes. Passing AI-300 earns the Microsoft Certified: Machine Learning Operations Engineer Associate credential. Microsoft states that associate, expert, and specialty certifications expire annually, while fundamentals certifications do not. Microsoft’s explanation is that one year keeps people’s skills in step with fast-changing technology, which fits a field where Foundry and Azure Machine Learning features change often.

One detail is easy to miss. The renewal page says that certifications available for more than six months have a renewal option. A brand-new credential therefore may not be renewable at once, which hardly matters in the first year.

How renewal works

Renewal is not a second exam. It is an online assessment on Microsoft Learn, and Microsoft describes it as unproctored and open book. The steps are simple:

  1. Sign in to your Microsoft Learn profile and open the Certifications section.
  2. Look for the Renew button next to the credential. It appears when you are eligible.
  3. Refresh your skills with the free modules on the renewal page, if you want to.
  4. Pass the assessment before the expiry date.

Things Microsoft publishes about the assessment:

  • It is free, and there is no limit on attempts.
  • It is shorter than the exam because it covers recent updates. Microsoft says it takes about 45 minutes.
  • It is available in the same languages as the exam, which for AI-300 is English only.
  • Its content follows the exam updates.
  • Passing extends the credential by one year from the old expiration date, not from the day you passed. Your Learn profile shows the new date immediately.

If you fail an attempt, you can try again right away. After the second try, Microsoft asks for at least 24 hours between attempts.

The six-month window

You cannot renew early. The assessment opens six months before the expiry date, and Microsoft times are in UTC. If you have an email address on your profile and agreed to Microsoft’s communication terms, you get a message when you become eligible. Microsoft recommends not waiting for the last day, because a bad internet connection or a few failed attempts could push you past the deadline.

There is no other path. Microsoft says you cannot renew by retaking the exam or by passing a beta exam.

What happens if the credential lapses?

If the credential expires, Microsoft says you must earn it again by passing the required exam. In this case that means sitting AI-300 again. The retake rule that blocks retaking a passed exam does not apply here, because that rule has an exception for expired certifications.

Retaking the AI-300 exam after a fail

Microsoft’s retake policy for role-based exams says:

  • Wait 24 hours before the second attempt.
  • Wait 14 days between all later attempts, up to five in total.
  • No more than five attempts in 12 months, counted from the first attempt. After five fails, you can try again 12 months from the date of your first attempt.
  • You pay again for every attempt, where a fee applies.
  • A waiver of the waiting time is possible only after internet or equipment failure during the exam, and you need the Pearson VUE case number. Other reasons do not qualify.

Your score report shows how you did in each skill area, so use it to choose what to study during the wait. The study plan shows how to use a short gap well.

What if the exam changes or is retired?

Microsoft updates exam content from time to time, and the study guide says localized versions follow about eight weeks after English. The renewal FAQ also says renewal assessments are updated along with the exams. For retirement, Microsoft says that if a certification retires before your expiry date, the Learn page tells you to renew before the retirement date, and the renewal window may be shortened. Microsoft has not announced a retirement for AI-300 on the pages checked, and this page does not guess one. The old Azure Data Scientist Associate certification, which the DP-100 exam supported, now shows as retired on Microsoft Learn, so retirement does happen when a role is replaced.

A simple timeline example

Say you pass AI-300 on March 10, 2027.

  • Your credential then runs for one year, until about March 2028.
  • The renewal window opens about six months earlier, around September 2027.
  • You pass the open-book assessment in October 2027. The expiry date moves one year past the old one, to about March 2029.
  • If you ignore the reminders and the date passes, the credential expires, and the way back is the full exam.

The exact dates are shown in your Learn profile, so trust it over any example.
