The short version
AI-200 gives you 120 minutes of exam time. You pass with a scaled score of 700 or more on a scale of 1 to 1,000, and the exam is proctored. If you fail, you can retake it after 24 hours. Microsoft does not publish the number of questions for this exam. These facts were checked on Microsoft Learn on October 18, 2026.
Time and number of questions
Microsoft’s AI-200 page says you have 120 minutes to complete the exam. Microsoft’s general table for exam duration separates “exam duration” from “seat duration”. Seat duration includes reading the instructions, accepting the candidate agreement, and leaving comments at the end. For associate exams that may contain labs, that table lists 140 minutes of seat time. Treat 140 minutes as a planning figure and read the details Microsoft shows when you register.
Microsoft does not state a question count for AI-200. Its general guidance is that most Microsoft certification exams have between 40 and 60 questions, and that the number can change as the exam is updated. If you see a precise number quoted on a blog, remember that it is not from Microsoft.
Time per question is therefore a guess. If the exam has around 50 questions, you have roughly two minutes for each one, but scenario questions take longer than short recall questions. A good habit is to practice reading a scenario, finding the one constraint that decides the answer, and moving on.
Passing score and how scoring works
Technical exam scores run from 1 to 1,000, and 700 or higher passes. This is a scaled score. Microsoft states that it may not equal 70% of the points. The passing score reflects the skills needed to show competence and the difficulty of the questions, which is why a simple percent correct tells you little.
Other scoring facts from Microsoft:
- Multi-part questions usually give one point per correct part. You can earn all, some, or none of the points for a question.
- There is no penalty for guessing. A wrong answer earns nothing, but nothing is deducted.
- Some questions may be unscored and are used to collect data. You cannot tell which ones, so answer every question as if it counts.
- Your score report shows an overall score, pass or fail, and a bar chart for each skill area. It does not show which questions you missed or a number per section.
Results usually appear within minutes for exams without labs, and your score also shows in your Learn profile within 24 hours.
Question types
Microsoft does not list the question types before the exam. It says the exam page may include interactive components, and it points to its exam sandbox, where you can try each question type in the real exam interface. Its general descriptions mention multiple choice, drag and drop, hot area, case studies, build lists, and labs for exams in general. Do not assume AI-200 uses all of them. Use the sandbox, which is free, and expect scenario-style questions that describe a system and ask what to do.
Learn access and breaks
Microsoft says you can use Microsoft Learn during associate and expert exams, through a button in the exam window. You can reach the learn.microsoft.com domain, but not Q&A, practice assessments, or your profile. No extra time is added, and the clock keeps running while you read. Microsoft says plainly that you will run out of time if you use it for every question. It is useful for one detail, such as a parameter name, not for learning a topic.
You can take unscheduled breaks. Five minutes are built into the exam time, but the clock continues while you are on a break, and you cannot go back to questions you saw before the break. Plan to use a break only when you need one.
Languages
Microsoft lists 13 languages for AI-200: English, Arabic (Saudi Arabia), Chinese (Simplified), Chinese (Traditional), French, German, Indonesian (Indonesia), Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese (Brazil), Russian, and Spanish. The study guide says localized versions are updated about eight weeks after the English version. If your language is not offered, you can request an additional 30 minutes.
Delivery
The AI-200 page says the exam is proctored and scheduled through Pearson VUE. It does not spell out test center versus online on that page, so check the options when you book. Microsoft recommends registering with a personal Microsoft account rather than a work or school account, because exam records tied to an organizational account can be lost if you leave the organization. Price depends on the country or region where you take the exam, so check it when you book. Our exam day guide covers ID, check-in, and what to expect on the day.
Retakes
- If you do not pass, you must wait 24 hours before the second attempt.
- After that, a 14-day wait applies between attempts, up to five attempts.
- You cannot take the same exam more than five times in 12 months from the first attempt.
- You pay for each retake, if a fee applies.
- You cannot retake an exam you have passed unless the certification has expired.
Microsoft can waive the waiting period only for connectivity or equipment problems that created a Pearson VUE case.
Renewal
Microsoft states that associate certifications expire annually. You renew with a free, unproctored, open-book online assessment on Microsoft Learn during a six-month window before expiry, and a pass extends the certification by one year from the expiration date. Renewal is for the credential. You do not retake the exam.

Frequently asked questions
Is 700 the same as 70%?
No. The score is scaled from 1 to 1,000, and Microsoft says 700 may not equal 70% of the points. Percentages from practice tests do not convert to the real score.
Is there a penalty for wrong answers?
No. Microsoft says no points are deducted for incorrect answers, so answer every question.
Can I use Microsoft Learn during the exam?
Microsoft says yes on associate exams, in a split screen inside the exam, with the clock still running and no extra time.
Will I know which questions I missed?
No. The report shows overall performance and a bar per skill area only.
