AI-103 Renewal and Retakes Explained

The short version

The credential you earn with AI-103 expires after one year, and you renew it with a free, open-book online assessment on Microsoft Learn. If you fail the exam itself, you wait 24 hours for the second attempt and 14 days between later attempts, with a limit of five attempts in 12 months. All of this comes from Microsoft’s pages, checked on October 22, 2026.

Does the credential expire?

Yes. AI-103 leads to the Microsoft Certified: Azure AI Apps and Agents Developer Associate credential. Microsoft states that associate, expert, and specialty certifications expire annually, and that role-based credentials are valid for one year from the date you complete all requirements. Fundamentals certifications are the exception: they do not expire. AI-103 is not a fundamentals exam, so plan for the yearly cycle.

One practical detail: the clock starts on the day you finish the requirements, not on January 1 and not on the day you receive a badge email. Write your expiry date in your calendar the day you pass.

How renewal works

Renewal is not a second exam. Microsoft calls it a renewal assessment, and its rules are different from the exam’s:

  • It is free. Microsoft says there is no cost to renew.
  • It is unproctored and open book. You take it online through your Microsoft Learn profile, in your own time and place.
  • It is shorter. Microsoft’s FAQ says renewal assessments focus on recent updates and take about 45 minutes. Treat that as a typical figure, not a promise for every renewal.
  • The window is six months. The assessment opens six months before your expiry date. You cannot take it earlier.
  • Passing extends the credential by one year from the expiration date. Taking it early does not cost you time, because the extra year is counted from the old expiry date, not from the day you passed.
  • The new date shows up immediately on your Learn profile after you pass.

To start, connect your Microsoft Learn profile to your certification profile and look for the Renew button under Certifications. If you gave Microsoft an email address and agreed to its communication terms, you should also get a reminder when you become eligible.

Microsoft recommends renewing well before the deadline, in case something goes wrong. Good advice: do it in the first month of the window, not the last week.

What if you fail the renewal assessment?

Microsoft says there is no limit on renewal attempts, as long as you pass before the certification expires. If you do not pass, you can try again immediately. After the second try, you wait at least 24 hours between further attempts. The assessments follow the same update cycle as the exam, and they are offered in the same languages as the exam.

What if the credential lapses?

If you miss the deadline, the renewal route is gone. Microsoft’s expiration policy says that once a certification has expired, you can no longer renew it and must earn it again by passing the required exam. In the case of AI-103, that means sitting AI-103 again, with the normal exam rules. Microsoft’s retake policy confirms the reverse case: you cannot retake an exam you passed unless the certification has expired.

Microsoft also says there is no other path to renew. Passing a beta exam or retaking the exam before expiry does not renew the credential. Only the renewal assessment does.

Exam retake rules

If you do not pass AI-103 on the first try, these rules from Microsoft’s retake policy apply:

  1. You wait 24 hours before the second attempt.
  2. After that, a 14-day waiting period applies between all later attempts.
  3. You may not take the same exam more than five times in 12 months, counted from the first attempt. After five failures, you are eligible again 12 months after your first attempt.
  4. If a fee applies, you pay for each retake.
  5. A waiver of the waiting period exists only for internet or equipment failure during the exam that produced a Pearson VUE case. It needs the case number. Microsoft says no other reason qualifies.

Your score report shows a bar chart per skill area but not which questions you missed. Use the bars to aim your study before the next attempt. The study plan can be shortened for a retake: spend the 14 days on your weakest domains from the report.

What if the exam changes or is retired?

Microsoft updates its exams over time and says the English version changes first, with other languages following about eight weeks later. The AI-103 study guide currently lists skills measured as of April 16, 2026. Microsoft also states that it can retire exams, certifications, and credentials at any time. A retired credential cannot be earned by new candidates, but it stays in the Active section of your transcript until it expires. For credentials that never expire, Microsoft says it stays for two years after retirement.

If a certification is retiring, Microsoft’s FAQ says renewal reminders can be suppressed and the renewal window may be shortened for some people, so the Learn page will tell you to renew before the retirement date. Microsoft’s pages we checked do not show a retirement date for AI-103.

For context, the older Azure AI Engineer Associate certification (exam AI-102) is marked on its Microsoft page as retired, together with its renewal assessment.

A timeline example

Suppose you pass AI-103 on March 10, 2027. Your credential then expires on March 10, 2028 (one year later). The renewal window opens around September 10, 2027. If you pass the renewal assessment on September 20, 2027, the new expiry date is March 10, 2029, not September 20, 2028. If you do nothing and March 10, 2028 passes, you must pass AI-103 again.
